Succulents
As the world becomes hotter and drier, we believe that succulents will become increasingly important as ornamental bedding, potted, landscape and food crops. Our work has focused on identifying the best succulent genera to introduce as new flowering bedding, potted and landscape plants. Below, please find new research as well as recent background information on cactus production.
Environment:
Influence of photoperiod on growth for three desert CAM species (Nobel, 1989)
Propagation:
Optimization of tissue culture protocols for cost-effective production of dracaena, bamboo, and succulent plants (Chaille, 2011).
Media:
Production protocols: Effect of media pH on the growth of golden barrel (Echinocactus grusonii), Crassula 'Spring Time' and Chamaelobivia 'Rose Quartz' (Cfahr Annual Report, 2009)
Growth:
Plant Growth Regulators:
Benzyladenine foliar sprays increase offsets in Sempervivum and Echeveria (Carey, Whipker, McCall and Buhler, 2008)
Gibberellic acid and benzyl adenine foliar sprays increase offsets in Aloe barbadensis (Sardoei, 2014).
Nurtrition
Flowering
Disease Control:
Agave:
Propagation mechanisms in Agave macroacantha (Agavaceae), a tropical arid-land succulent rosette (Arizona and Ezcurra, 2002).
Aloe:
Aloe ferox (Dept of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, South Africa, 2013)
Production of Aloe vera wine (Pongpornchedtha et al.)
Propagation techniques and agronomic requirements for the cultivation of Barbados Aloe (Aloe vera (L.) Burm. F.) - A review (Cristiano et al., 2016).
Gibberellic acid and benzyl adenine foliar sprays increase offsets in Aloe barbadensis (Sardoei, 2014).
Effect of gibberellin acid and benzyladenine growth regulators on offsets production of Aloe barbadensis at greenhouse conditions. (Sardoei et al., 2013. IJABBD, 1(11):1457-1465.
Portulaca:
Characteristics of crassulacean acid metabolism in the succulent C4 dicot, Portulaca oleracea L. (Koch and Kennedy, 1980).
Crassulacean acid metabolism in the succulent C4 dicot, Portulaca oleracea L under natural environmental conditions (Koch and Kennedy, 1982).
